Ten million dollars in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds have been allocated through the Richmond Region Metropolitan Planning Organization, MPO, to a project to widen Route 10 in the vicinity of the Old Stage Road intersection, which includes widening the bridges over the CSX railroad tracks.
This project is part of a larger plan to widen Route 10 between Route 1 and Meadowville Road in order to address heavy congestion along the corridor. Widening Route 10 has been on the Board of Supervisor’s priority list since 1992, and also has been identified as a priority project for the Richmond Region. As part of the county’s 2004 bond referendum, $15 million was budgeted to the project at Old Stage Road. An additional $5 million is also anticipated from the Virginia Department of Transportation to go toward the project.
The project was in jeopardy of being delayed because additional funding was needed. The county has been actively seeking construction funds to move the project forward.
“We’re excited to finally have all of the funds in place so we can get started,” said Stan Newcomb, engineering supervisor for the county’s Transportation Department. “We appreciate the efforts of the MPO in making this project a priority.”
It is anticipated that construction will begin in 2010 and will take approximately two years.
