Benjamin Hon-Wen Heah of Midlothian, is one of six winners of the Dominion Memorial Scholarship Program. Heah, son of Eng and Selena Heah, will receive up to $5,000 for the 2011-2012 academic year. The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years.
Now in its fourth year, the scholarship fund was established in memory of Matthew Gwaltney, Rachael Hill and Nicole White – students with close ties to Dominion who were killed in the April 16, 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. The scholarships are awarded to the children or grandchildren of Dominion employees. Heah is the son of Eng Heah, director of Asset Management-Treasury at Dominion.
“Benjamin was selected based on academic performance, community service and leadership,” said Robert M. Blue, senior vice president-Law, Public Policy & Environment. “He has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in these areas. Matthew, Rachael and Nicole were known for these traits, and we are confident Benjamin will honor their memories through his continued success.”
Heah was selected from a national pool of applicants to serve as a U.S. high school diplomat and spent four weeks traveling in Japan last summer. He has worked with the James River High School Energy Innovation Project to install solar panels on his school and educate students about alternative energy. Heah also runs his own company. He cofounded Kick Start Apparel, a company that offers specially designed and printed apparel.
Heah graduated from James River High School and plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall. He was selected from among 196 applicants from 13 states.
