The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will make community the focus of several games this season. Highlighting that campaign is the Flying Squirrels Hometown Heroes Series, which invites fans to nominate community heroes (ex. Firefighters, Policeman, Teachers, Coaches, etc…) that have made a positive impact in their lives. Those hometown heroes will then be invited to The Diamond where they will be celebrated on four separate Hometown Heroes Nights at the ballpark (July 19, July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 25).
The team will also hold two Education Day games (May 6 and 20) at The Diamond, each featuring a 10:35 a.m. first pitch. Local school districts will be invited to participate in Education Days at the ballpark, and each will receive an Education Day book, designed to make learning fun through baseball.
The team will have an organized reading program, and reward students for reading by hosting them at Flying Squirrels games on five nights throughout the season. Richmond Reading Night (April 19), Hanover Reading Night (April 21), Chesterfield Reading Night (May 3), Henrico Reading Night (May 4) and Petersburg, Caroline and Goochland Reading Night (May 18) make up the dates of the reading program reward nights. The team will also host a back to school celebration on Sept. 3.
